Egypt's national table tennis duo Mariam Al-Hadhibi and Youssef Abdelaziz clinched gold medals in the men's and women's singles respectively at the North African Championships.
This followed table tennis legend Mariam Al-Hadhibi's 4-2 victory over her sister - the equally legendary Marwa - in today's all-Egyptian women's singles final, securing gold for Mariam and silver for Marwa.
Mariam Al-Hadhibi secured her place in the finals after defeating Farida Badawi 4-2, while Marwa Al-Hadhibi advanced by overcoming Yousra Ashraf Helmy 4-1 in today's semifinals. This Egyptian triumph concluded with Mariam claiming gold, Marwa taking silver, and both Yousra Ashraf Helmy and Farida Badawi earning bronze medals - completing Egypt's medal sweep.
Earlier in the quarterfinals, Farida Badawi defeated compatriot Hind Fathi 4-1, while both Al-Hadhibi sisters delivered dominant 4-0 victories against Tunisian opponents - Marwa and Mariam each sweeping their matches. Yousra Ashraf Helmy joined the winning streak with a 4-1 triumph over another Tunisian player. Notably, Egypt's entire women's national team received direct quarterfinal berths in the women's singles, bypassing the round of sixteen entirely.
Egypt’s dominance was cemented during the group stages, where all players delivered commanding performances. Mariam Al-Hadhibi opened with twin 3-0 sweeps against Tunisian and Algerian opponents in Group 1, while Yousra Ashraf Helmi took a 3-1 victory over Tunisia followed by a 3-0 win against Algeria in Group 2. Group 3 saw Hind Fathi secure two flawless 3-0 results versus Algerian and Tunisian rivals, with Marwa Al-Hadhibi mirroring this perfection in Group 4 through three consecutive 3-0 triumphs (against Algeria and two Tunisian players). Farida Badawi rounded out Group 5 with two 3-1 wins and a 3-0 clean sheet against North African competition. The men’s tournament concluded with Youssef Abdelaziz claiming gold by walkover after fellow Egyptian Mahmoud Ashraf Helmi withdrew due to injury, capping Egypt’s comprehensive medal haul across both singles events.
Completing their continental supremacy, Egypt's national teams secured gold in the women's team event and silver in the men's team competition, cementing the nation's overall championship title. The medal tally showcased Egyptian dominance with eight total medals - three gold (including Mariam Al-Hadhibi's singles victory and the women's team title), three silver, and two bronze - comfortably securing the top position on the podium. This collective achievement followed earlier individual successes where Egyptian players had swept both singles and team events, demonstrating unparalleled depth in North African table tennis.
