UNESCO Assessment Mission to Dungonab Bay Marine World Heritage Site

On Junaid Sorosh-Wali, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Sudan, accompanied by Mr Abdelgadir Salih, Head of Natural Sciences Unit, led an assessment and stakeholder engagement mission to Dungonab Bay and Mohammed Gol, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Sanganeb Marine National Park and Dungonab Bay – Mukkawar Island Marine National Park”, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2016.

The mission was conducted in collaboration with H.E. Mrs Sumia Oshiek, Minister in Charge of Investment, Tourism and Environment in Red Sea State, and Mrs Leila Osman, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Organisations at the Federal Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism, alongside local communities and key stakeholders.

Discussions focused on conservation priorities and sustainable development initiatives supporting biodiversity protection and community wellbeing, including ecotourism, women and community empowerment, local product marketing, improved access to clean water, site management and monitoring, and UNESCO-led technical and vocational training and skills development initiatives.

UNESCO extends its appreciation to the local communities and Sudanese stakeholders for their resilience and continued commitment to preserving this unique World Heritage site for future generations.
