The Story of the First Murder in History

This story is mentionجed in Surat Al-Ma’idah (5:27–31) and tells of the first murder in human history. Allah says:

“And recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. The latter said, ‘I will surely kill you.’ The former replied, ‘Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous. If you stretch out your hand against me to kill me, I shall not stretch out my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds. I want you to bear my sin and your sin, and thus become one of the inhabitants of the Fire. That is the recompense of the wrongdoers.’ Then his soul prompted him to kill his brother, so he killed him and became one of the losers. Then Allah sent a crow scratching in the ground to show him how to bury the body of his brother. He said, ‘Woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and bury the body of my brother?’ So he became one of the regretful.”

Adam (peace be upon him) and his wife Eve were blessed with twins: Cain and his sister, and Abel and his sister. According to the law of that time, each male would marry the twin sister of the other, in order to preserve human lineage. However, the problem began when Cain refused this arrangement because Abel’s twin sister was more beautiful than his own. He wanted her for himself and rebelled against the division that Adam had accepted by Allah’s command.

To resolve the dispute, Allah commanded each of them to offer a sacrifice. The one whose offering was accepted would have the right. Abel offered one of the best of his sheep, while Cain offered some of his crops.

A fire descended from the sky and consumed Abel’s offering as a sign of acceptance, while Cain’s offering was rejected. Cain could not accept the result. Feelings of jealousy and anger erupted within him, and he said to his brother, “I will surely kill you.”

Abel responded with purity and calmness: “Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous. If you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.”

Although Abel possessed physical and mental strength, he chose not to respond to aggression with aggression. Instead, he presented a rare example of submission to Allah’s decree and fear of His punishment.

But Cain could not bear this righteousness. His soul tempted him, and he committed the great crime: he killed his brother, becoming the first murderer on earth — “and thus he became one of the losers.”

The First Teacher of Humanity in Burying the Dead

After committing the crime, Cain stood before his brother’s body, confused about what to do. He did not know how to hide it from animals or people. He carried it aimlessly, burdened by guilt as much as by its physical weight.

Then Allah sent a crow that scratched the ground, digging to bury another dead crow. Cain watched in astonishment and cried out in regret: “Woe to me! Am I unable to be like this crow and bury the body of my brother?”

Cain learned from the crow what his own instinct had not taught him. He dug a hole and buried his brother’s body. But the pain was not buried with him. Instead, it remained with Cain as eternal regret, accompanying him until the Day of Judgment.
